DECEMBER COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

On Wednesday, December 13, the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce hosted an engaging Community Connections event, bringing together nearly 20 community members, elected officials, and key stakeholders. With in-person attendees and a live stream option, the event provided an opportunity for meaningful discussions and updates on various local initiatives. Sponsored by NorthWestern Energy, this monthly roundtable discussion is an invaluable platform for fostering collaboration.

Buffalo County Updates

Tim Higgins, Buffalo County Commissioner introduced Lisa Poff, Buffalo County Election Commissioner to speak about Nebraska's New Voter ID Law. Poff shared that Voter ID begins with the May 2024 primary election and every election in Nebraska after the May 2024 primary will require voter ID. She explained the types of IDs that Nebraskans can use to vote under the new law, which includes a Nebraska driver's license, Nebraska state ID, Nebraska college ID, Nebraska political subdivision ID, passport, Military ID, Tribal ID, or a hospital/assisted living/nursing home record. She expressed the importance of a valid ID having both the voter's name and photo. It is to be noted that active-duty military members, active-duty military spouses, and citizens overseas covered by UOCAVA are exempt from voter ID. She explained that mail-in ballots must be requested with a Nebraska Driver's License number, a State Identification Card number, or a photocopy of a picture ID. More information about voter ID can be found on the Secretary of State's website. In addition, Poff added that poll worker applications can be found online or at the Election Commissioner's Office.

City Developments & Updates

City Councilmember Jonathan Nikkila provided an update on various topics, including the discussion on city staff authorization of stickers on city buildings, signaling a restriction on firearms within these spaces, and the options around this issue. Acknowledging the importance of this matter, Nikkila expressed gratitude to Mayor Stan Clouse for his exemplary leadership, navigating inquiries, and addressing complaints around this topic.

Nikkila delved into the pressing issue of lead water pipes in some Kearney homes. He shared that the state has initiated a program, where they will allocate approximately 3 million dollars to cover a significant portion of the removal costs. The city, in tandem, will cover about 1 million dollars towards this as well. Nikkila affirmed that the city staff will be working on this project over the next several years. He also highlighted the council's approval of a housing action plan, mandated by the state. Understanding the growing demand, he shared that the anticipated need is 200 new housing units annually. Lastly, he shared that the council honored the invaluable service of firefighters for their anniversaries. Notably, Brad Anderson was recognized for his remarkable 30-year commitment to the fire department.

Kearney Public Schools & Education Updates

Paul Hazard, Kearney Public Schools Board Member covered a range of topics from the December Board of Education meeting. Hazard spoke on the Nebraska Department of Education's data for Kearney High School, highlighting the noteworthy observation that KPS spending per pupil stands at $12,904—placing us modestly among our educational peers. Hazard shared that KPS recently received three early resignations and has successfully filled two of those positions. Additionally, Superintendent Mundorf received a contract extension for two years. The Board of Education is also currently engaging in teacher negotiations.

Board Member Hazard took the opportunity to address and clarify the situation surrounding the resignation of Kearney High School's Head Girls Basketball Coach. He stated that the coach's departure was not a termination nor a forced resignation. To dispel any potential misunderstandings, Hazard mentioned an impending statement from Kearney Public Schools Administration.
