JULY COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS


On Wednesday, July 12, the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce hosted an engaging Community Connections event, bringing together community members, elected officials, and key stakeholders. With 10 in-person attendees and a live stream option, the event provided an opportunity for meaningful discussions and updates on various local initiatives. Sponsored by NorthWestern Energy, this monthly roundtable discussion is an invaluable platform for fostering collaboration.


Notable Discussion

Mayor Stan Clouse commenced the morning session with a dynamic overview of the latest city council developments, starting with the notable appointment of Carol Pelster to the esteemed Community Redevelopment Authority (CRA) Board., as well as updates on the SportsPlex. Mayor Clouse also touched on construction in the community and shared that two Proclamations were introduced at their recent meeting for Coach Brad Archer and UNK Alumni, TV Personality, and Pro Wrestler, Tyrus Murdoch.


City Development and Education Updates

Mayor Stan Clouse articulated the progress of the new SportsPlex while highlighting the key updates shared by Kearney SportsPlex Manager, Lauren Brandt. In her presentation to the city council, Brandt outlined the project's fee structure and eagerly announced that the official groundbreaking ceremony will take place on August 1, 2023. The discussions surrounding this groundbreaking initiative underscored the commitment of the Kearney community to fostering engaging activities for residents while generating positive economic activity.


Paul Hazard, Kearney Public Schools board member, provided a comprehensive update on several construction projects during his address. He highlighted the ongoing remodel of Windy Hills Elementary and shared the Board of Education's plan to relocate students for the 2024 year. Half of the students will be transferred to Buffalo Hills Elementary, while the other half will temporarily move to First Baptist Church, a rented facility. Additionally, Hazard announced the exciting addition of a new track and turf field at Sunrise Middle School, which will match the quality of facilities at Horizon Middle School. He also addressed questions regarding enrollment trends and projections, emphasizing that KPS is actively monitoring these factors.
